Special Feature: From the Bride
We had a lot of fun with the planning process. My husband has had a handlebar mustache for some time now (I convinced him to grow it – I love mustaches!), and we both knew right away that we wanted the mustache to be a recurring theme. We wanted a traditional wedding with a lot of our fun-spirited personality to shine through. Add whiskey and cigars to the mix (two more things we share a love for) and we have a Vintage 1920s Gatsby inspired wedding! With the wedding being right in between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, we went with a classic gold, black, and white color scheme incorporating lots of gold sequins and glitter to tie in the holiday feel. Our bridesmaids had an old Hollywood look with the hair and makeup paired with glamorous gold sequined dresses. Ostrich feathers in our bouquets added an extra touch of vintage glam, The crystals on my heels which I added myself, and my mother made my matching beaded veil. We both did a lot DIY and designing ourselves – from the invitations we put together, to the centerpieces we made from coffee filters and Christmas ornaments, to the mustache namecards, to the gold wine bottle candleholders that we spray-painted, to the candy and cigar bar tables… On top of that, we had a great team help put everything together. We poured a lot of love into all the little details which made the wedding planning that much more special to us.
With our date being in late December in San Francisco, I was definitely nervous about cold or rainy weather! But surprisingly the weather was beautiful that day – you would never have guessed it was December! Everything went so smoothly with the help of our coordinator. No stress, no cold feet. Just excitement! Our ceremony was held at the church where my husband had gone to grade school, St. Thomas More Catholic Church in San Francisco. It was his only real request for the wedding as it had been his dream to get married there (he’s a big romantic at heart). He even refused to do a “first look” photoshoot because he wanted his first time seeing me to be when the doors opened at the church. The whole morning, everyone had been asking me about that moment, “Are you gonna cry?” I had been telling myself that I wouldn’t because I really didn’t think I would! However, as soon as those doors opened and I saw my husband on the other side of the aisle crying joyful tears, I just couldn’t hold it back! It was so surreal! After the ceremony we had our reception at the South San Francisco Conference Center. With 280 guests, it was definitely a party! This is where most of our Gatsby theme was carried out with the decor and signage, the cigar bar, and lots of whiskey! We couldn’t have imagined that night any better!
