How Much Does a Wedding Planner Cost?

Most wedding planners have three common types of packages: day of service, consulting, and full-service planning. Here is a breakdown of how much a wedding planner service will cost based on its type:

Typical Costs

  • Prices for wedding planning services vary greatly by region, different packages and planner’s experience. A full-service wedding planning estimates about 10-15% of your total wedding budget. This is fair for wedding budgets up to $100k; the percentage may diminish for wedding budgets over $100k.
  • A day-of planner: This service typically costs around $1,500-$2,000+ in larger metropolitan areas.
  • A consulting planner: In a larger metropolitan area such as Washington DC, a well-established and experienced wedding planner can charge around $100-$150 per hour.
  • A full-service planner: In larger metro areas, this service typically costs about $5,000-$6,000 but can costs as much as $10,000-$15,000 or more, for an in-demand planner who has at least 10 years of experience.

What Is Included?

  • Day of service package: wedding planner will typically confirm final details with vendors, and help create a wedding day timeline for the couple. On the day of the wedding, the planner will be present at the venue and ensure every detail is set up the way the client has envisioned it. Sometimes with day-of packages there is a set amount of hours they will work on the wedding day; typically, the wedding planner does not get involved until 2-4 weeks prior to wedding day.
  • Consulting package: wedding planner may recommend venues and vendors, offer tips on colors, style, and etiquette, and guide couple with staying on track with wedding planning. Planner will not be responsible for legwork and small details, but may interact with vendors on the day of the wedding and handle all the wedding day details from beginning to end, to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
  • Full service package: wedding planner will typically help with setting the theme, style and color, booking the ceremony and reception venues, recommending reliable vendors with industry discounts, negotiating contracts and confirming logistics with all the vendors, and accompanying the couple to floral mockups, food and cake tastings, etc. The planner will also help set and manage the budget, giving the client realistic expectations and educate them on what things cost. On the wedding day, the planner will be on hand to take care of any last-minute details and ensure that everything is running on schedule, according to the wedding timeline.
  • The details of packages and services will vary from planner to planner, so it is important to clarify exactly what is expected from the wedding planning service in writing.

Additional Fees

  • Although not expected, couples may choose to tip their wedding planner or give a nice gift. Typically, the tip is $100-$500. It could be more for high-budget wedding.
